    Perhaps unecessary work done but a generous discount

    I booked my 10 year service and MOT with "Stellantis and You" because I wanted an experienced dealer to change my timing belt. The mechanic failed my front and back breaks but did not show how they had failed the MOT. I was shown no photogrtaphic evidence, nor was I shown the discs. In the end, I was given a generous discount. The full story started when a member of staff called and told my wife that my three year old break discs, with only 22,000 miles of mostly motorway driving, failed the MOT due to corrosion, however, the MOT criteria for a break failure are as follows: A brake disc or drum must be significantly worn before you should reject it. Being worn below the manufacturer’s recommended limits is not a reason in itself. Brake disc or drum: (i) significantly and obviously worn (ii) insecure, fractured or otherwise likely to fail. Surface corrosion is not a fail. I called the dealership to ask about why the breaks failed the MOT. I was told they were corroded. I asked if the corrision caused as fail of efficiency or performance. The memeber of staff went to ask and came back to say, they had failed, but gave no substantive reason. This lack of a proper explanation gave me reason to doubt the diagnosis. The member of staff offered to discount the cost of the service. The discount was very generous, covering the cost of the rear discs and breaks but not the front. My customer feedback: when breaks are assessed for clients who cover the costs themselves, rather than cars under payment plans or service plans where changes are paid for by insurance, a full technical explaination for a fail, including breaking force and efficiency tests, should be given to the customer so the customer can decide what to do based on the facts. I am very grateful for the discount.
